“Humans have always seen the stars. We have looked to the sky to learn that we are part of a greater pattern. We have used stars to begin and end stories, to light the dark nights, to guide us homeward, to order our days and months and years. Our oldest ancestors slept under them. Others navigated by them. Always, they’ve inspired wonder and the excuse to explore.
Stars provide us orientation. We reach for them when we dream. They fix our latitude. They show us where, exactly, our place in the universe lies. They show us the scale of our world. They humble us, they inspire us, and they give us perspective beyond the small worlds of our lives.
Sometimes we lose sight of them. The lights of technology, the glitz of cities, the products of progress, the moment-by-moment needs of humanity, block their light. But all it takes is a journey to find them again: a pilgrimage to a place where the sky is open.
Welcome to the desert. Here, you can see the stars.”
